1380 Yılında Osmanlıca Yazılan Kitap, Günümüz Türkçesine ÇevrildiAfyon Kocatepe University (AKU), Afyonkarahisar Governorship Provincial Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) and Bolvadin Municipality evaluated the results of the scientific studies conducted by AKU Earthquake Application and Research Center (DUAM) on the analysis and mapping of surface deformations observed within the Bolvadin residential area under the Consultancy Service Protocol signed between the institutions. They also discussed the disaster risks of Afyonkarahisar and the priority work to be done.
The meeting, chaired by Afyonkarahisar Governor, Assoc. Dr. Kübra Güran Yiğitbaşı, was attended by AKU Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karakaş, Deputy Governor Mehmet Keklik, Bolvadin District Governor Taner Bolat, Bolvadin Mayor Fatih Kayacan, AFAD Provincial Director Mehmet Buldan, administrative officials of related institutions and organizations involved in the project, and AKU DUAM Director Prof. Dr. Çağlar Özkaymak, AKU DUAM Deputy Director Prof. Dr. İbrahim Tiryakioğlu, and AKU DUAM Board Member Dr. Asst. Veli Başaran.
Deformations in buildings reached 7 kilometers
AKU DUAM Director Prof. Dr. Çağlar Özkaymak, who made a presentation on the results of their study conducted in Bolvadin residential area, stated that surface deformations that started to occur after the February 3, 2002 Çay earthquakes measuring 6.3 and 6.0 on the Richter scale, on Bolvadin Fault had been continuing to increase every year without causing any destructive earthquakes. Özkaymak stated that three new deformation branches became significantly visible on the surface after the year 2020, making the total length of these deformations to reach approximately 7 kilometers. He also mentioned that an average of 9 centimeters of vertical displacement occurred along the deformation line every year. Approximately 100 buildings were affected by these deformations along the linear deformation line.
Deformation zone should be declared a Risk Area following urban renovation
Özkaymak pointed out the risk of a possible disaster in Bolvadin, stating that the faults and fractures under the buildings could reduce the carrying capacity of the ground and cause permanent damage to the buildings on it. He said that the buildings located on these deformations would be the first to collapse in case of earthquakes that might occur in the region. Therefore, priority work should be done about declaring the 7-kilometer-long deformation zone inside Bolvadin residential area a Risk Area after Urban Renovation and moving the damaged structures within the zone to non-disaster risk areas, according to Özkaymak.
AFAD Provincial Director Mehmet Buldan provided information on the project developments regarding the rockfall risks observed in Büyük Kalecik along with Bolvadin residential area.
At the IRAP meeting, the views of the participating institutions and organizations regarding the priority work to reduce the risk of possible future disasters in Afyonkarahisar and its surrounding areas were evaluated, and urgent measures to reduce the risk were discussed.
