Acıbadem Eskişehir Hospital's Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Burcu Aydemir Efelerli, while discussing misconceptions about the Eid al-Adha and the potential health issues that can arise afterwards, warned that unsupervised and heavy meat-based meals during this period can tire the body and lead to certain physical damage. Dr. Burcu Aydemir Efelerli provided important information to prevent potential negative situations. "One of the most serious and frequent mistakes is when the meat is cooked and served right after it is cut," said Dr. Efelerli, adding that the meat should be rested for at least 24 hours after being cut. She also mentioned that in addition to meat, sweets also burden the body significantly and invite cardiovascular diseases.

"Leaving the table satiated is a mistake," warned Dr. Efelerli, who spoke about nutritional mistakes during the Eid al-Adha and the related illnesses that can arise from them. "Eid al-Adha is a beautiful holiday, with abundant food and drinks. Ramadan Bayram is also competitive with Eid al-Adha. However, the problem here is that since Eid al-Adha is a holiday that we are heavily fed with meat-based foods, we need to be careful. For example, we make the mistake of serving fried meat as breakfast the morning after without resting the meat for 24 hours, which is not suitable. The meat should be rested for 24 hours. We should also sit at the table hungry and stand up hungry in terms of eating and drinking habits. We should never deviate from this adaptation," she said.

Dr. Burcu Aydemir also emphasized that besides the cooking conditions of the meat, it should be served with vegetables. "For example, red meat consumption can cause trouble for those prone to gout disease, meaning that when consumed more than normal, it exacerbates gout, a disease also known as 'rich disease' in public. These things which can give rise to problems related to the cardiovascular system can create propensities. Therefore, we may have problems with cardiovascular diseases," she said.

Dr. Efelerli also warned diabetic patients to be very careful and urged those with insulin resistance to eat "little and often" because of the addition of baklava, pastries, cakes, and sweets to the meat.

"Going for a 40-minute walk is extremely beneficial," said Dr. Burcu Aydemir, drawing attention to the fact that along with changes in dietary patterns, the digestive system also needs rest. "Holidays will bring coffee, tea consumption, and heart and rhythm problems with them. We should not suddenly change our eating and drinking habits and not put a load on our digestive system. The digestive system needs rest. Let's avoid being sedentary. What I mean by that is walking, but if they can swim, swimming will also be good. Support yourself with 40-minute walks a few days a week."

Dr. Efelerli also emphasized the need to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day because it is summer. "Eating heavy foods will cause us a lot of trouble. Serve the meat with vegetables. Serving only red meat is not correct. It should always be accompanied by vegetables. Do not forget that the table should be rich in vegetables. There should be fibrous foods so that we do not become constipated," she said.
